Before the Light Breaks the Dark for the Day

(For Leah)

Before the light breaks the dark for the day,
stay a while and just savour the night,
gaze in my eyes and hear what I won't say.

Before long, someone will take you away
from this cold, sunless place to a new height
before the light breaks the dark for the day.

Your blue eyes put me at ease as I lay
my head against yours and see with blind sight.
Gaze in my eyes and hear what I won't say.

I always will insist that I must pay
for time away and hot cocoa drunk right
before the light breaks the dark for the day.

Together someday off a distant bay
watching the water reflect the moonlight.
Gaze in my eyes and hear what I won't say.

Now, with heart and soul, these last words I pray;
Open your heart and listen so you might,
before the light breaks the dark for the day,
gaze in my eyes and hear what I won't say.
