Ages ago, she was a peasant who became the leader of a heretical cult. Now, she's just a lonely ghost.
As the spirit of an arch-heretic, she was confined to a burning coffin in Dis, to forever suffer for her defiance. When Dis became less about the sinners and more about the demons, the damned went unattended and were, to some extent, free. Like her fellow arch-heretics, she cannot leave Dis, but is thankful that the worst of her suffering is behind her. Now she exists as a mostly unseen and forgotten creature, craving even the slightest bit of acknowledgment.
For the last couple of decades, Madeline has been haunting Hanna's apartment complex, clinging to any spirit-sensitve tenants, and usually driving them away (or, in one case, driving one to suicide). Hanna is the only one who acknowledges her, so Madeline keeps close to her.
Madeline is a bit of the jealous type, and is not fond of any of Hanna's guests. They probably would never notice that, if Madeline couldn't make ecto-plasm tattoos.
Madeline is not her real name. She forgot it long ago, and was renamed within the last century.
The skin on her back was removed not long before her execution, to be preserved as a relic of her cult because of the tattoos on it, illustrating their beliefs. As a ghost, she bears a never open wound on her back, but usually keeps it concealed.
