Isobel is the illegitimate daughter of two weakblooded humans of conflicting demon bloodlines. The strange assortment of demonblood lead to her most distinguishing trait: lopsided horns. She also has slightly pointed ears, and no spleen. In her childhood, such a clear mark of poor breeding was a curse on the playground and a handicap in all future social atmospheres.
Her older half-brother, Drake, got her a job with a contact of his, Gabriel Illumenato, the aspiring fashion designer. Isobel worked as an intern for Illumenato Fashions and Designs (later shortened to IL Fashions & Designs) just as it began to take off as a the pioneer of the freak-chic trend, which catered specifically to demonkin with weakblooded oddities. She was discovered and became the leading face of IL. She recently was able to break her exclusive contract with Gabriel, and now does advertisements and modeling for other companies. Her acting career is very fresh with little screentime, but she is exceedingly proud of how far she has come. (see Drake)
Since she became the most recognizable face of IL, she has been dating the former lead model, Helena Tennyson. Their relationship is marred with rumors of Helena just trying to remain close to the spotlight as her popularity fades. Isobel ignores the rumors (fighting them would only feed them more), and enjoys time with her girlfriend.
She doesn't know what she will do when her career fades in favor of another face, and she has yet to give it any thought. Isobel is popular for the first time in her life, and she doesn't want to think about chance.
Her half-brother looks after her, although his big-brother syndrome annoys her at times. He hates her girlfriend, and Helena returns his hatred in kind. Isobel typically just gets quiet when these two argue, as she feels powerless to break up their quarrels.
Her mother, Verdelet (not her birth mother), accepts her despite the infidelity that produced Isobel. Verdelet, a demon whose primary residence is in hell, never had a problem when she discovered her husband's adultery or the illegitimate daughter, and welcomed Isobel when the birth mother didn't. The demon, although frequently absent from the family picture, has always been kind to Isobel in their sporadic encounters.
How the Character Came About Isobel is based on a story that never went anywhere, which drew from a dream of mine in which I had lopsided horns and a demon boyfriend. She gets my middle name, since she's based on a dream version of myself. In the first story she was in, she was just the ditzy little insecure bimbo who was dating the main character. Drake was in that story, and he constantly threatened her boyfriend to treat her right or suffer the consequences.
While still kinda flakey and bimbo-y, Isobel is more intelligent for this comic.... although she's hardly had any pages to prove it. She's quite a sweetheart.
By the way, as the creator, I'm not certain if Isobel is lesbian or bisexual. I don't think demonkin are that hung up on gender preference. They're more mindful of whether or not their partner is demonkin or not, and what kind of demonkin. It's all about who you know, not about the gender of who you know.
